Opioids Crisis, Evictions, Better Counting Push Paterson Homeless Number Up 66%

By: Joe Malinconico

Paterson’s homeless population surged by 66% from 2023 to 2024, driven by factors like the opioid crisis, increased evictions, and expanded efforts to count unhoused individuals, according to the NJ Counts report. The report found that 411 people were homeless in Paterson in January 2024, with both sheltered and unsheltered populations rising significantly. Social service leaders attribute the increase to rising rents and limited affordable housing, with many unhoused individuals facing mental health and addiction challenges.
