New Jersey Calls For 85,000 New Housing Units

By: Diana Ionescu

New Jersey's Mount Laurel Doctrine requires each town to provide sufficient affordable housing to meet local demand, prompting the state to call for 85,000 new units, mainly in northern areas. Some local officials, like Parsippany’s mayor, argue that increasing high-density housing could overwhelm infrastructure and resources, while others are already building affordable units. The Department of Community Affairs (DCA) allows towns to adjust these targets by proposing alternative calculations based on local factors like sewer capacity and environmental considerations.
