A new federal lawsuit filed by six homeless New Yorkers alleges that the city’s encampment sweeps regularly violate its own policies by providing little or no notice before removing people’s belongings. These sweeps often result in the destruction or confiscation of irreplaceable items, such as family photos, identification, and survival gear, leaving people without essential belongings needed for housing or employment. The plaintiffs argue that these practices violate their Fourth Amendment rights and demand the case be expanded to include others affected by these actions.
